home/homme

Through this series I dissect the navigation between masculinity and sexuality within my environment (family, love, politics). By utilizing old paintings and prints I use them as signifiers to contextualize the original imagery into my own narrative with color, material, and found objects. I connect the past with current matters shaping my identity, while reversing the culturally decided code of gendered colors (blue – boy, pink – girl). These paintings surrounded me as I grew up and are synonymous with Americana, kitsch and domestic home life. With each piece, I try to pay tribute to the irony, or sincere tenderness of the work created before me. By claiming these as my own and altering the surfaces, I begin to analyze and understand what components of my life have influenced my identity and persona.
